Non-Aligned Conference Opens in Bali

President Yudhoyono Opens Non-Aligned Movement Bali Conference Celebrating 50 Years of Political independence for the Non-Block Nations.

(5/28/2011) Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono arrived in Bali on Wednesday, May 25, 2011, to open the 16th Ministerial Conference of Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Non-block movement.

The celebrations and conference in Bali adopted as its theme “Shared Vision on the Contribution of NAM for the next 50 Years.”

The Bali conference was convened to continue the work and decisions made at the GNB conference held in Sharm El Sheik, Egypt in July of 2009.

The Non-Aligned Movement was founded in Belgrade,(then Yugoslavia) now Serbia, in September 1961. Prior to the NAM’s formal establishment, an Asia-Africa conference was held in Indonesian in 1955 which laid the groundwork for the movement which sought independence from major power hegemony and the ideological struggle then underway between the Communist and non-Communist power blocks.

Attending the Bali conference are ministers from the 118 member nations of the non-aligned movement and from two candidate members – Fiji and Azerbaijan. 18 observer nations are also attending the Summit.
