Say it with Flowers

Bali Floral Club Demonstrates a Balinese Style of Floral Arrangements

(6/6/2011) Floral enthusiasts who joined in a floral exhibition and competition organized by the Bali Floral Club on  May 17-19, 2011, in Denpasar, were treated to a unique Balinese approach to modern floral arrangement.

One of the main speakers at the event, internationally recognized floral expert Bart van der Elsken, told the Balinese participants to be confident and daring in using the diversity of leaves and flowers available in Indonesia and, in so doing, bring international fame to Bali.

Reflecting that directive, the magnificent floral arrangements on display at the exhibition were inspired by traditional Balinese culture.

Some of the highlight, included:

· "Cili" - a reflection of Dewi Sri the goddess of fertility. Normally woven from colored lontar leaves, "cili" bring fertility, health and good fortune.

· "Jirimpen Dangsil" – a part of traditional ceremonies in Penglipuran village in Bangli.

· "Gebogan" or "Pajegan."

· "Tamiang" rendered in a 1.5 meter long arrangement on the wall of the exhibition.

· "Canang Sari" - the ubiquitous offerings of Bali intended to express gratitude to Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa.

Other highlights at the exhibition included tropical flowers and leaves decorating an antique wooden boat where ginger flowers, carrots, red peppers and coconut represented nature's bountiful gifts to Bali.

The event closed with a workshop, which was attended by more than 90 floral artists, including two participants from London, on creativity in floral design.
