The People Have their Say

Citizenís Group at Nusa Dua - Bali Want Their Voice Heard in Resolution of Zoning Case Against Beach World Club.

(6/6/2011) In the struggle, recently joined by the Minister of the Interior, between the provincial government of Bali and the Badung regency over the legality of the Beach World Club at Nusa Dua, the people of Nusa Dua are still insisting that their voice be heard and their interests protected.

Recent closed-door meetings between provincial and regency officials over the controversial project are being decried by Nusa Dua residents who want a more transparent resolution to the problem of the restaurant-entertainment complex they claim is built too close to the water’s edge and impedes public access to the beachfront.

NusaBali confirms that as recently as June 3, 2011, work on the project continued with contractors applying finishes to walls and the roof. The continuing construction is underway despite two formal letters of warning from the provincial government ordering all work to cease due to zoning violations.

Meanwhile, the people of Nusa Dua who originally protested the Beach World Complex are still awaiting an inclusive process of socialization in resolving the dispute promised them by the vice-regent of Bandung. As a result, Wayan Luwir, a spokesman for the Nusa Dua residents opposing the project said: “There has been no meeting with the community. The people still reject this project." Luwir also said the recent closed door meetings between officials discussing the project that failed to include the community were a source of disappointment to the people of Nusa Dua.

Luwir said that the governor’s threat to close and demolish the project remained the best solution to the Beach World Complex controversy. Adding: “Legally it’s very clear, if the project is in violation then tear it down. As a member of the public, we support the governor’s steps to tear down this project. I wish to test the governor: Will he execute the law on this project?"
