The Heights of Power

Bali to Build World's Tallest Electrical Pylon near Gilimanuk.

(6/13/2011) Antara -the national news agency, reports that the State Electricity Board (PT PLN) will erect the world's tallest electricity pylon of 376-meters near Gilimanuk on Bali near the crossing point to Java.

The current record for the tallest electrical pylon is located at the Yangtze River crossing at Jiangyin in China which stands 346.5 meters.

Plans to build the tall tower capable of supporting electrical transmission lines carrying 3,000 megawatts from Java were revealed by the president director of PT PLN, Dahlan Iskan, speaking at a conference in Bali on June 10, 2011. Nicknamed the "Bali Crossing" - the line will support power lines originating from the giant Paiton power generating facility in East Java.

Iskan said the construction of the tower will commence in late 2011 or early 2012. The structures legs will occupy and area the size of a football field, contain a central lift and have a width of 70 meters on the tower's upper structure separating the high power cables. Iskan explained that the substantial width of the tower is needed to prevent the extremely high power lines from touching each other in high wind conditions.

The decision to opt for a suspended cable over underwater cables was made when experts felt the currents in the straits between Bali and Java would pose a risk to the essential power connection and past experiences with failed submarine transmission lines.
