A Matter of Training

Bali Leaders See Local Train System as Solution to Traffic Congestion Woes.

(6/24/2011) The former chairman of Bali’s Foreign Exchange Association (APVA), I Made Saputra Karang, is recommending that Bali urgently build a local rail system in order to help remedy the growing traffic congestion problems on the island.

Karang, who is also one of the founders of the Kuta Karnival, sees a ring railway as an urgent need for both tourists and local residents. He envisions a train system circling the borders of Bali’s regencies to facilitate the movement of people and goods between all areas of the island.

According to DenPost, Karang’s idea gained voiced support from a member of the Badung House of Representatives (DPRD-Badung), I Made Sumertha, who sees a local rail system as a means of reducing traffic congestion. At the same time, however, he said planning for any rail system would also have to include a supporting mass transit network operating from the rail stations to local population centers surrounding the rail stops.

Sumertha sees the proposed rail system as an important step in achieving a more even spread of development across all areas of Bali and thereby reducing the crush of people flocking to live in the Badung regency and Denpasar.
