Diplomatic Impunity?

52-year-old French Woman Arrested with Cocaine at Baliís Airport.

(7/11/2011) A 52-year-old woman, identifying herself as an employee of the French Embassy in Bangkok, Thailand, was apprehended by customs officials at Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport on Saturday, July 2, 2011 trying to conceal 3.17 grams of cocaine in mouth.

Keita Ep Toureh had just arrived on an Air Asia flight on a ticket originating from Bangkok.

Officials say the women’s behavior and slurred speech raised suspicions resulting in the discovery cocaine in her luggage. A further physical search of the woman uncovered the reason for her speech impediment:  three small plastic bags containing cocaine concealed within her mouth.

Prosecutors must now decide how to charge the woman with punishments ranging, depending on what part of the anti-narcotics code are applied, from a minimum of 5 years in prison to a death sentence before a firing squad.
