Getting Know You, Getting to Know All About You

Baliís Capital of Denpasar Introduces New Electronic Identity Cards (E-KTP) for Local Residents.

(7/25/2011) In order to improve overall security in Bali and eliminate the widespread illegal practice of duplicate identity cards, the government is introducing Electronic Residency Cards (E-KTP) to be issued to Indonesian nationals living in Bali starting in August 2011.

The law requires that all Indonesian national must be in possession of a valid KTP issued by their home province.

The new E-KTPs will be issued initially in Bali’s capital of Denpasar where an estimated 460,000 Bali residents currently hold the existing cards to be replaced with electronic versions.

Nyoman Gede Narendra, the chief of the Residency and Civil Registry Service for Denpasar, told Bali Post the replacement of the old cards with the modern electronic versions is part of a national program aimed at eliminating the prevalence of cases where an individual holds KTPs from more than one province.

Narendra said that the E-KTP program would be introduced in Denpasar without a trial period because the E-KTP issuance program has already been successfully introduced and trial-tested in other areas of the nation.

The E-KTP will include both the signature and the fingerprints of the cardholder. The cards will also include a permanent Single Identity Number (SIN), which can also be used for banking purposes.
