At Your Service

Westin Resort Nusa Dua Bali Support Fast-Rising Indonesian Tennis Star Tami Grende.

(8/7/2011) 14 year-old Bali tennis prodigy Tami Grende is quickly moving up the ranks of pro junior tennis players. Ranked 1,365 in the world last year, Tami is currently ranked 260th in the world resulting from a steady stream of impressive wins.

Recently, Tami won 4 titles in a ITF Jubilee School 14 & Under Asian Championships held over 2 weeks in Jakarta. The only Indonesian player to ever sweep four titles in the event, she has earned a place on the International Tennis Federation (ITF) team, paving the way for sponsored appearances in France, German, Holland and Belgium.

Tami first took up the game of tennis at four years of age and has been encouraged by her Italian father-coach Olivier Grende. Joining them on the road and the exciting young player’s rise up the ranks has been her devoted Balinese mother, Luh Kertiadi, originally from Singaraja, North Bali.

Climbing the ladder of tennis success is not easy, and it’s certainly not cheap. Many of the other young international players who Tami’s easily defeats in international play enjoy sponsorships from major corporations to help cover the considerable expense of training and travel. While Tami and her parents are still looking for a major corporation interested in having their name emblazened on Tami's tennis outfit, no major angel has yet to step forward.

While this search for a major corporate sponsor continues, The Westin Resort Nusa Dua, as part of its Starwood Cares Program, is generously providing the Indonesian National Champion in the under 14 category with a full membership to its onsite court facility to facilitate her training routine.

Tami’s talent first came to the attention of The Westin when she participated in the inaugural UNICEF Check Out for Children Tennis Tournament in 2004. Only 7 years of age at the time, Tami, who was the youngest participant, impressed all watching the competition with her verve and level of play.

Through her participations in the Westin Resort’s annual tennis tournaments, Tami has had the opportunity to meet and be inspired by witnessing the on-court style of play by great greet international tennis players like Lindsay Davenport, Patty Schnyder, and Daniela Hantuchova.

Tami’s immediate goal is to get into the top 100 of women tennis players opening the way for her to participate at Wimbledon next year.

Commenting on his hotel’s support for Tami Grende, Bipan Kapur, General Manager of the Westin Resort Nusa Dua said: “We wish Tami the best of luck. It is so refreshing to see a talented young girl preparing to embark on a professional sporting career. Seeing her improve from year to year has been a truly inspiring process. We are very proud to be able to take part in supporting Tami and we hope to see her at Wimbledon next year.”
