Use of Turtles in Balinese Religious Ceremonies on the Decline.

(8/22/2011) Data supplied by the Bali Center for the Study and Conservation of Turtles (TCEC) indicates that the demand for turtle meat used for Balinese religious ceremonies has experienced a dramatic decline over the past 5 years.

According to the TCEC estimates less that 100 turtles are consumed for religious purposes in Bali each year, down from the 300 turtles consumed just a few years ago.

The chairman of Serangan Bali TCEC, Wayan Geriya, told Beritabali.com on Tuesday, August 16, 2011, that the use of endangered turtles in religious offering has shifted to ducks and goats, in accordance with religious directives issued by the Bali Hindu High Council (PHDI). Moreover, those who still employ turtles in offerings are more inclined to use a small quantity of turtle meat only in a symbolic manner.
