Cell Therapy in Kerobokan

Baliís Notorious Kerobokan Gets a US$325,000 Refit to Repair Damage Caused by June Riot

(8/22/2011) The Indonesian government has allocated Rp. 2.8 billion (US$325,000) to pay for repairs at Bali’s Kerobokan prison needed to address damaged incurred during a prison riot in June.

According to the Jakarta Globe, the money will be used to repair six cell blocks damaged when prisoners reacted angrily to a mid-night raid on the prison by national anti-narcotics police. Prisoners briefly ran amuck knocking holes in walls, ripping out bars and attacking guards, including the prison’s warden. In all 18 areas of the prison suffered significant damage that encompassed cellblocks, reception areas, the main hall, visiting rooms, the jail cooperative and a canteen.

Siswanto, who heads the prison and was injured in the riot, told the press that prisoners also set fire to TVs, refrigerators and sound systems.

Because the repairs are urgent the work will be carried out with first undergoing a tender process.

Badly overcrowded, the Kerobokan facility houses 1,070 prisoners, counting 53 foreigners, several of whom are on death row awaiting execution for narcotics convictions.
