Itís All Happening at the Zoo

Bali Zoo Welcomes Six Sumatra Elephants to Singapadu

(8/22/2011) Anak Agung Gde Putra, the owner of the Bali Zoo in Sigapadu, Bali, has prevailed in his long battle to add Sumatran elephants to his park’s animal collection.

A part of the community in Singapadu, local residents surrounding the Zoo are said to be thrilled with the arrival of the giant mammals to their neighborhood.

On Monday, August 15, 2011, six of a total of 14 elephants authorized by the Minister of Forestry for the Bali Zoo arrived on site. Such was the excitement of the surrounding community - the Banjars of Apuan and Seseh, that, when the pachyderms were unloaded after the long truck journey from Sumatra to Bali, the local residents took turns giving the appreciative animals a welcoming bath.

Local villagers were proud that the park had completed the complex rules and requirements  needed to win approval from the government to houw elephants at the Bali Zoo.

Because of the several animal attractions now operating in Bali, both the Bali Zoo and the local community have fought hard to obtain elephants for the collection in order to remain competitive in winning visitors.

The park, owned by a native of Singapadu, prioritizes the employment of local residents. The initial addition of 6 elephants to the Bali Zoo has immediately increased employment with 24 new staff hired to handle the care and feeding of the Sumatran Jumbos.
