Precautions for Obama Bali Visit Included 2 Ships from U.S. Navy on Patrol Near Nusa Dua

(11/18/2011) In addition to at least 5 Indonesian warships deployed off Bali’s shores during the ASEAN Summit and the visit of U.S. President Barack Obama [See: In the Navy: You Can Put Your Mind at Ease]  two U.S. Navy ships were also stationed off Bali to bolster a massive security umbrella put in place during Obama’s 2-day visit.

The USS Essex - a wasp-class amphibious assault ship carrying a crew of 1,800 and the battle ship USS Strethern carrying 281 personnel were also patrolling within striking distance of Nusa Dua where the U.S. Chief executive was attending the summit.

Indonesian Navy Commander Sulaeman Banjarnahor told the Jakarta Post that three military officers from the national armed forces were traveling with the USS Essex to monitor and coordinate the operation of the foreign vessels while in Indonesian waters.
