Flights of Fancy?

Rumors of an International Airport in North Bali Resurface

(7/13/2012) The Jakarta Post reports that PT Angkasa Pura – the State-owned company managing most Indonesian airports, have announced their intention to construct a major airport in North Bali to reduce the strain on the current strain on Ngurah Rai International Airport estimated to have handled 13 million passengers in 2011.

And, despite a major renovation program now underway at Bali’s sole airport, experts predict that Ngurah Rai will reach its maximum carrying capacity of 20 million passengers by 2015.

Bali's proposed international airport of the north would be designed to handle 40 million passengers.

Details of the proposed new airport, including its cost, remain sketchy, but are understood to include a location in the regency of Buleleng now dedicated to agricultural uses. Detailed plans have yet to be developed for the airport nor have the necessary approval for the airport been obtained from local government and the Department of Transportation.

Plans to build a large international airport in Bali’s north would also suggest that a supporting infrastructure of highways connecting the airport to the island’s south would also need to form an absolute part of such a development.
