The Penalty Phase

German Chef Working in Bali Facing Prospect of One or Twenty Years in Prison for His Drug Addiction

(10/19/2012) A German chef working in Bali and caught with 0.1 gram of methamphetamines in July has commenced his trial before the Denpasar District Court that could send him to prison for 20 years.

Sven Hauke Landthaler, heard public prosecutor, Bayu Dunarko, charge him with violating that section of the nation’s anti-narcotics law carrying a maximum penalty of 20 years behind bars. At the same time, however, he was  charged under a separate section of the same law carrying a lesser penalty of one-year imprisonment.

The 31-year-old chef was arrested in July after a female acquaintance, Hairani, was arrested on a drug charge. Information provided by the women to police led them to a home in Canggu, North Kuta occupied by the German where police found the small quantity of drugs.

The German chef has confessed to police that he is a habitual user of methamphetamines and a former patient of a rehabilitation program in Germany. After assuming a cooking position in Bali, he resumed consuming drugs, leading to his arrest.

The German's trial continues before the Denpasar District Court.
