A Breakdown of the 117 People Sitting on Death Row in Indonesia
(11/25/2012) As Indonesia ponders the possibility of abolishing the death penalty, it is timely to attempt a census of the number of people literally sitting in the shadow of death on death rows in various prisons across the archipelago.
Here's the breakdown:
- There are presently 117 people sitting on death row. 58 (49%) of this total are in connection with narcotics offenses. This overall total of 117 may not include 4 people recently sentenced to death in Bali for the murder of a local family near Benoa.
- Of the 117 total of condemned convicts, 76 (64%) are Indonesian nationals with the remaining foreign nationals.
- Of the 41 foreigners awaiting an early morning firing squad across Indonesia, 12 (29%) are Nigerian; 6 (14,6%) are Chinese; 3 (7.3%) are Australian; 3 (7.3% are Dutch); 2 are Malaysian; 2 are Pakistani; 2 are Brazilian; 2 are form Malawi; 2 are South African; 1 is Indian, 1 is Thai; 1 is from Ghana, 1 is from Nepal; 1 is from Senegal, 1 is from France; and 1 is from Zimbabwe.
- 76 people have exhausted all avenues of appeal and are therefore subject to execution at any time. Of this total of 76 people, 15 convicts (19.7%) have been on death row for less than 5 years; 48 (63.2%) have been on death row for 5-10 years; 12 (15.8%) have been on death row for 10-20 years.
- One convict, Bahar bin Lastar (67), had been on death row for more than 20 years until his death from natural causes in a Cilacap, West Java prison in August of 2012.
- Indonesia has executed 60 convicts since 1979. The last and most recent slew of executions took place in 2008 when 10 prisoners were put to death.
