Half a Decade to Think it Over

German Martin Robert Moller Given Five Years in a Bali Prison for Smuggling 287 Grams of Hashish

(5/12/2013) A German national, Martin Robert Moller (42), has been sent to prison in Bali for 5 years and ordered to pay a US$100,000 fine after being found guilty of trying to smuggle 287 grams of hashish. Failure to pay the fine will result in an additional three months of prison being tacked on to the man’s prison sentence.

The Denpasar District Court handed Moller the sentence on Wednesday, May 8, 2013, - a punishment slightly less than the 5.5 years sought by State Prosecutors.

The maximum sentence that could have been imposed in the crime was 15 years.

Moller was arrested on December 14, 2013, off a Thai Airways Flight from Bangkok when 22 capsules of hashish were discovered hidden in his stomach.

Police estimate the street value of the drugs is Rp. 172 million (US$17,200).

Moller has accepted his sentence, indicating he will not appeal the court’s decision.
