Bali Prepares to Inaugurate the Tallest Statue of Buddha at Gilimanuk, West Bali

(6/2/2013) The tallest statue of the Lord Buddha in Indonesia located at the Vihara Empu Astapaka Monastery in Gilimanuk, Jembrana, West Bali, will be formally inaugurated on Thursday, June 6, 2013.

The ceremony is expected to attract more than 1,000 Buddhist traveling from across Indonesia to witness the event.

Beritabali.com quoted the chairman of the Empu Astapaka Foundation, Pmy Sudiarta Indrajaya, who said in Denpasar on Wednesday, May 29, 2013: “The 25-meter high statue of Buddha and the surrounding area of the Vihara Empu Astapaka will be inaugurated on Thursday, June 6, together with the celebration of Waisak Santhuti Citta 2557. The inauguration of the complex will be presided over by the Regent of Jembrana Putu Artha, witnessed by the Director General of the Buddhist Section of the Ministry of Religion.”

Once officially opened, the statue is expected to become a significant tourism attraction for the Island of Bali.

“The statue of Buddha will become a new icon of Bali, marking Bali as the island of balance and stability (Dharma). Tourists who have just arrived in Bali via the overland route will see the new statues. The open hand of Buddha held facing forward will become a symbol of reconciliation and peace – marking Bali as the island of peace,” said Artha.

The complex is intended by its managers to not only be a place of pilgrimage for Buddhist but to also become a center of education and information.
