Bali Governor Pleads for an End to Public Demonstrations Again Benoa Bay Reclamation Project

(8/5/2013) After organizing a public hearing Saturday, August 3, 2013, Bali’s Governor Made Mangku Pastika has appealed to the people of Bali to stop demonstrating against the planned reclamation of a large portion of Benoa Bay.

As reported by the State News Agency Antara, the Governor told the meeting: “After this, I ask that there be no more demonstrations. It looks bad with a number of international events scheduled to be held in Bali in the near future.”

The governor reminded his audience of the many benefits to Bali that will accrue from the successful hosting of events such as Miss World, the APEC Summit, World Culture Forum, and World Trade Organization meeting.

Continuing, the governor said: “There will also be thousands of foreign journalists covering these events. This means we get free promotion (from these events) and don't need to undertake international promotion.”

The governor warned that if these events fail because Bali is seen to be unsafe due to street demonstrations, then Bali risks low tourist arrivals that will affect the economic condition of the people of Bali.

Bali has seen a number of demonstrations in recent days by various environmental action groups opposed to the a decree granted by Governor Pastika to allow a major reclamation project in Benoa Bay adjacent to a protected mangrove forest reserve.
