Swearing by Bali

Baliís Governor and Deputy-Governor Sworn in for 2013-2018 Term

(9/1/2013) The Indonesian Minister of the Interior, Gumawan Fauzi, formally inaugurated Made Mangku Pastika and Ketut Sudikerta as the Governor and Deputy-governor of the Province of Bali for the period 2013-2018 at a ceremony held in Denpasar on Thursday, August 29, 2013.

Quoted by the State News Agency Antara, Minister Gumawan said: “I hope the wheels of government for the coming five years will be more advanced. As we all know, Section 18 of Article 1 of the 1945 Constitution clearly provides that the Sovereign Republic of Indonesia is divided into provinces, regencies, and municipalities with local governments established under the rule of law.”

He reminded his audience at the swearing-in ceremony that the spirit behind granting autonomy to local governments was intended to improve services to the public by bringing development into line with each region's specific condition and potential.

“Meanwhile, the Central Government will concern itself more the formulation of norms, standards, procedures and criteria for the governance of a unified state,” explained Gumawan.

The Minister of the Interior went on to say how the surrendering of power from the center to the regions has been the central theme of decentralization and has paved the way for the improved welfare of Indonesian people.

Concluding, Gumawan said: “It is the regions that best know the potential they possess; the weaknesses that stand in their way; and the best solutions to solve problems in accordance with the cultural characteristic of each district.”

He called on Bali’s newly installed Governor and Deputy-Governor to retain as a priority the eradication of poverty during the five years with which they have been entrusted to administer the province and its budgets.
