(9/8/2013)

Bank Indonesia has warned the public  in Bali to exercise caution due to the high amount of counterfeit money in circulation.

The State News Agency Antara reports that Bank Indonesia estimates during the second quarter of 2013 (April-June)  counterfeir money circulating in Bali totaled 1,126 bank notes, a large increase over the 925 counterfeit notes found in Bali during the preceding quarter.

Dwi Pranoto, who heads the Bank Indonesia office for Bali and East Nusa Tenggara, said, “Both in terms of quality and quantity, the incidence of counterfeit bank notes in the tourism region of Bali this year fluctuated, increasing in the last three month as compared to the preceding quarter.”

According to field reports, most counterfeit money (92.52%) is in the form of Rp. 100,000 notes - the largest denomination of the Indonesian currency, followed by Rp. 50,000 notes (6.7%).
