Bali just hosted its largest international netball tournament on October 19, 2013, with 11 teams from Singapore, Thailand, Australia and Indonesia competing for the 2013 Netball in Paradise Champion’s Trophy.

The tournament, held at Bali International School annually since 2007, was a full day round robin event with simultaneous games conducted on three courts, providing spectators with non-stop action.

The competition was fierce with the Atua Team representing the New Zealand Chamber of Commerce in Singapore – undefeated in all 10 games – who won the champion’s trophy.

The Bangkok Barbarians claimed runners-up honors and another Singapore team - Just 4 Fun came in third.

Of Bali’s two teams, the Seminyak Fireflies went home with the Wooden Spoon Trophy while the Sanur Dragons placed a more respectable eighth.

"Netball was the winner on the day," said Bali Flames president and tournament organizer Rebecca Hamer. "This tournament was our biggest yet. Bali has annual Rugby and Australian Rules tournaments that draw teams from around Australia and Asia, and now the women are getting the opportunity to ‘go on tour’ as well! We just had teams from Darwin and Perth here in August, and we are already getting enquiries from other teams who are happy to use netball as an excuse to escape for a long weekend to Bali,” said Rebecca.

Rebecca added, “After the netball, it’s always on to shopping, massages and a girl’s night out!”

Predominantly a Commonwealth Nations' sport, netball is the pre-eminent women's sport in Australia and New Zealand. It is also popular in other former British colonies, such as Canada, Malaysia, Singapore and Sri Lanka. A non-contact sport roughly similar in characteristics to basketball; there are goal rings at each end and a 'centre' circle at which play begins after each goal, but netball does not allow bouncing, contacting, obstructing or running with the ball.

The tournament wound up with an awards presentation dinner at the new Red Drum Restaurant in Kerobokan. Trophies were presented to the winning team (and the last-placed Seminyak Fireflies), along with Player of the Day, Mel from the victorious Atua team, and runner-up, Genevieve from Bangkok Barbarians.

A raffle was also held at the dinner, with a portion of proceeds going to R.O.L.E Foundation to help disadvantaged women in Bali get access to vocational training and job opportunities in the tourism sector, to break their poverty cycle.

The Bali Flames Netball Club play socially at the Bali International School every Tuesday night from 6:00-7:00pm. New players are always welcome who embrace the concept that the Club is serious about not taking netball too seriously.
