Bali Toll Road Wants to Create Convention, Shopping and Refreshment Stop on Bali’s Tollway in Once Sacrosanct Conservation Zone

The CEO of PT Jasamarga Bali Tol (JBT), Enkky Sasono, has confirmed that JBT is preparing to present an environmental impact study (Amdal) in 2019 for the construction of a rest area over Benoa Bay that will be known as the Bedawang Nala Rest Area.

As reported by Tribun-Bali.com, Sasono said the 2019 target for presentation of the Amdal might not be achieved given the need for careful planning in connection with the dining and shopping complex that JBT wants to build over what was once a protected nature reserve.

The design for the modern rest are is inspired by the shape of a mythical turtle is already in hand. Sasono commented: “Hopefully in 2020 construction will begin, please pray for us.” Explaining the concept for the Bedawang Nala Rest Stop, Sasono said: “In addition to presenting Balinese arts, there will also be Balinese food served and packaged to an international standard of presentation.”

JBT is targeting that people will stop at the Rest Area before leaving Bali from nearby Ngurah Rai International Airport.

The Bedawang Nala Rest Stop’s plans call for a facility covering 30,000 square meters and will reportedly contain meeting and conference facilities.

Meanwhile, JBT is targeting an increase of 4% in vehicular traffic for 2019. In 2018, some 54,000 vehicles traveled on the toll road in 2018. JBT also plans to soon install the latest in toll road collection technology in which vehicles will be able to travel without stopping at a toll booth before traveling on the roadway.
