Seeking Domesticity to Replace Missing Chinese Travelers

Government Requests Steep Discounts on Air Travel to Bali, North Sulawesi, and Bintan

Kompas.com reports that the Indonesian Government will be extending special discounts on domestic flights destined to Bali, North Sulawesi, and Bintan.

The decision to grant deep discounts was taken to compensate for the sudden downturn in tourist arrivals resulting from the loss of Chinese tourists traveling to Indonesia because of the novel coronavirus outbreak.

Moeldoko, the Chief of Staff for President Joko Widodo, speaking after a ministerial meeting on Thursday, February 6, 2020, said: “The Government has taken steps via the Ministry of Transportation by giving special discounts on domestic flights bound for Bali, North Sulawesi, and Bintan.”

Meanwhile, Adita Irawati, a special staff at the Ministry of Transportation said that the Ministry has held discussions regarding discounts with many airlines. Regarding the size of the discounts to be granted on these flights, Adita said it would be left to the respective airlines to decide.

“The Ministry of Transportation has issued instructions, the application of which will be left to each air carrier,” explained Adita.

Continuing, Adita said the discount on air travel are intended to keep Indonesian tourism flowing despite the closure of some air routes during the current health crisis. The Government will endeavor to seek solutions in order that Indonesian tourism destinations do not experience a downturn in visitor numbers. “We are trying to encourage domestic travel by offering special airline packages. The airlines will announce the size of their discounts,” she said.

The Indonesian government has temporarily suspended all flights connecting Indonesia and Mainland China during the continuing novel coronavirus outbreak.
