BALI UPDATE #046 - 12 JUNE 1998
U.S. GOVERNMENT LIFTS TRAVEL BAN ON INDONESIA
Better late than never. The U.S. Government have declared
that it is now safe for Employees of the Jakarta U.S. Embassy and the
U.S. Consulate General in Surabaya and their dependents to return to
The latest announcement from the Embassy effectively
lifts the 04 June travel warning for Americans to defer all non-essential
travel to Indonesia. Americans can now consider travel, including travel
for the purpose of tourism, as safe in Indonesia.
The latest announcement from the American Embassy
specifically signals Bali as having remained safe over the past weeks
- the favourite theme of BALI PROMO and this newsletter. The latest American
announcement states: "Major tourist areas in Bali have not experienced
violence during the transition period, although there have been some demonstrations
on the island."
When we contacted America's Consular Agent for Bali,
Mr. Andrew Toth and asked him what his answer would be to American's calling
his office to ask if it was safe to come to Bali, he said: "Come, do come,
of course. Bali Now, Better than ever."
Praise the Lord and send the tourists!

A Bali re-launch has been scheduled by JAPAN AIRLINES
for the last week of this month in order to restart the flow of business
to the island. Two separate two-full-page editorials, including a letter

In the course of a private dinner hosted by SIA,

More details to follow soon!

pro-active and supportive of BALI PROMO's efforts to relaunch the Bali
Tourism Product. Meanwhile, Andrew Chee, local SIA Manager, reports daily
increases in passenger uplift into Bali.
