BALI UPDATE # 087 - 23 October 1998
UPDATES ARE BEING TECHNICALLY UPDATED
The BALI UPDATES will soon take advantage of many
technological innovations made possible through this newsletter's cooperation
with Bali Paradise on Line. Some of the changes we hope you'll note starting
from our next edition:
* A new, easier to follow presentation format.
* Direct Hyper links to any web site mentioned and highlighted in the
newsletter. We'll not only tell you about exciting links on the web, you'll
now be able to double click your mouse and link up to those sites directly
from the newsletter.
* Using a new high-tech database, we'll be able to go to press quicker
and hopefully be able to eliminate any duplication of messages.
Should be exciting.
"Beam me up, Scotty."
NEWS FLASH
According to today's edition of the Jakarta Post,
Northwest Airlines is reportedly in negotiation with the Indonesian Civil
Aviation authorities to institute air service between Bali and Los Angeles.
The proposed service will reportedly be something of a "milk run" with
intermediate stops in Hawaii and Guam.
If the proposed new air service is commenced, it
will represent the second American carrier serving Bali. Continental Micronesia
currently flies to and from Bali with regular flights via Guam.
While the plans have not been formally announced,
BALI PROMO's Chairman, Luther Barrung, was quoted in today's Jakarta
Post as saying "the open-air policy is a must if we want to increase the
number of tourists visiting our country."

70 YEAR OLD AIRCRAFT
TO LAND IN BALI
Lang Kidby is expected to fly a single-engine 70 year
old aircraft from Jakarta to Bali on Friday as the next leg of his recreation
of a historic flight from London to Darwin, Australia.
Flying a 70 year-old Avro Avian aircraft, Kirby is
following the same route that pioneer Australian aviator Bert Hinkler
flew 70 years ago. The historical retracing of the earlier aviators trip
has taken two months so far, with stops in Bali and West Timor planned
before the trip's completion in Darwin.
Quoted in article carried by Reuters News Service,
Kidby has encountered a variety of problems along the way including Indian
bureaucrats who required some 62 pieces of paper before he could take
off and most recently tropical thunderstorms on his flight from Singapore
to Jakarta.
According to Kidby, "I haven't seen blue skies for
ages."
Well, Mr. Kidby, We' ve got good news for you.
First, with some luck, the airport authorities at Ngurah Rai International
Airport will embrace President Habibie's recent proclamation of "open
skies" and extend you every courtesy during the visit of your aircraft
to Bali. Second, despite the occasional shower at this time of year,
weather in Bali continues to be glorious with plenty of blue skies.
BALI PROMO wishes you a "happy landing" in Bali.
COMMUNITY BEACH CLEAN
UP
The Forum Pemerhati Sanur will host a beach clean-up
day on Sunday, November 8, 1998 along Bali's Sanur Beach between 1500
and 1830 hours. A team building exercise for the Sanur Community, the
clean-up is a joint effort between the Bali Environmental Education Centre,
the Wisnu Foundation, and the Casa Grande Sanur - an organization comprised
of the hotels operating in Sanur.
The "clean up" will focus on the beach between from
Jalan Matahari Terbit to Jalan Merta Sari. The schedule calls for the
beach clean up between 1500 and 1630, a snack break from 1630 to 1700,
speeches and the announcement of the winner of a children's drawing competition
from 1700 to 1745 and a traditional comedy performance from 1745 to 1830.
The winning drawing will be adopted as the logo
for the Sanur Project.
An afternoon of fun with members of Bali's Sanur
Community and a clean beach at the end of it all. For more information
contact Suzanne d'Angelo at telephone (0361) 285905, Richard Bousted at
telephone (0361) 281781 or Tia at telephone (0361) 281684.

the fun!

NUSA DUA : A STUDY IN
SUCCESSFUL TOURISM DEVELOPMENT
Visionary leaders in Indonesia's tourism industry
realized in the late 1960's that Bali's economic development was tied
to tourism. These leaders began to seriously consider ways in which the
need for growth in Bali's tourism could be accommodated without overwhelming
the local traditional values which are the basis of the island's world-wide
appeal.
In 1970, the Government engaged a French firm of
consultants, SCETO, to develop a master plan for the development of tourism
in Bali. Part of the SCETO plan called for the development of tourism
enclaves or self-contained resort complexes removed from the main population
centres in order to the minimalize negative impact of development on traditional
Balinese culture.
As a result, the Nusa Dua Master Plan was developed
by another consulting firm, Pacific Consultants, in 1973, the same year
in which the Bali Tourism Development Corporation (BTDC) was formed.
The project would be the largest ever carried out
in Bali. Some 300 hectares would be developed from an area of seaside
coconut groves where no roads, markets, or public services then existed.
Building started on a central amenities core to provide an environmentally
friendly infra-structure that would eventually serve an impressive collection
of some of the finest hotels and recreational facilities to be found
anywhere in the world.
Back in the 1970's there was no shortage of critics
and nay-sayers who ridiculed the location and the very concept of a planned
tourism development in Bali. Those vocal critics are today in scarce supply
as the BTDC is pointed to around the world as a successful example of
how tourism should be developed without sacrificing local cultural values.
In a short span of just 20 years, BTDC has become
home to the championship Bali Golf and Country Club; Galleria Nusa Dua
shopping area; Bali International Convention Centre; Amanusa Resort ,
Sheraton Nusa Indah, Bali Hilton, Hotel Putri Bali, Grand Hyatt Bali ,
Bali Aga Hotel, Club Med, Awani Suites, Seraton Lagoon, Melia Bali, Hotel
Bualu, and the Nusa Dua Beach Hotel and Spa.
ITV - WISH YOU WERE
HERE A GREAT SUCCESS
The U.K. ITV Television program "Wish You Were Here"
was broadcast on October 21 and according the one major U.K. tour operator,
Margaret Hensman of Magic of the Orient , the effect was instantaneous.
According to Margaret, "we all stayed to watch the
programme in the office and the piece on Bali had hardly finished and
the phone lines just kept on ringing for nearly two hours." The office
telephone lines were kept open until 2100 hours just to handle the flood
of calls from people asking about travel to Bali.
Margaret extends her thanks to Bali Tours and Bali
Promo for facilitating the visit of the film team to Bali.
TRICK OR TREAT AT THE HRBC
