TEXT OF MR. BARRUNG'S
Last Thursday, Bali's Regional Director of Tourism,
Mr. Luther Barrung, issued a formal written statement to all overseas
wholesalers and foreign embassies in Jakarta. The text of that statement
"Many have expressed concern regarding the overall
security situation in Bali in the wake of last weekend's street demonstrations
in Jakarta. I would like to take this opportunity to advise that my office,
in close cooperation with local police authorities, maintain a constant
monitor on the overall security situation for tourists on the island.
In this regard, I am pleased to report that Bali remains calm and peaceful
with visitors to the island enjoying normal holidays.
Over the weekend (editor's note : 13- 15 November),
students briefly staged a sit-in protest at Bali's International Airport
to emphasize their call for political reform. This event was peaceful
and did not cause any delays in passenger movements. Various prayers
and political speeches have been made by student groups at the local government-owned
TV and radio station and at the the local ruling political party's headquarters.
All these events have taken place without major incident and with close
and cordial cooperation between the students and police authorities in
order to maintain the peace and the good reputation of Bali.
My office is very pleased to note that in travel
advisories issued by both the Australian and U.S. Governments over the
past days, Bali has been singled out as "calm" and "free of the disturbances"
that may have occurred in other areas of the country.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you
for your continuing support of the island of Bali, its people and its

The 2nd annual Nusa Dua Festival opens on November

arts and crafts, the Festival will kick-off with a grand procession of
more than 1,000 Balinese in traditional costumes with the women carrying
offerings towers of fruits and flowers atop their heads. Meanwhile, the
men will do their part as they play traditional musical instruments and

And that's just the beginning. Each and every day

The 8 days of crafts and art will conclude on Thursday,

NORTH SULAWESI FORMS
A PATA CHAPTER
Besides Bali, there are many other regions of Indonesia
that have been unaffected by social unrest and continue to offer tourism
destinations of tremendous value and unparalleled beauty.
One such area is North Sulawesi. At the very northernmost
part of the Indonesian archipelago, Manado, the provincial capital of
the region, provides excellent hotels, beach resorts and a rich and vibrant
local culture for visitors.
Renowned for its scuba diving, the coral gardens
of the Bunaken Marine Park, the Bangka Straits, and the underwater volcano
at Sangihe Island offer world-class dive sites numerous enough to fill
any diving holiday. Land-based activities focus on rain forest hiking
in the Tongkoko Nature Reserve, home to the larges concentration of black-crested
macaques and the world's smallest monkey - the round eye Tarsius Spectrum;
the Dumoga Bone National Park with its majestic waterfalls, volcano climbing
and river rafting; or just exploring the highland areas of nearby Tomohon
In order to better promote this region, a new North
Sulawesi PATA Chapter has been formed. Mr. Jeremy Barnes, a local hotelier
in Manado, serves as the Chapter's chairman.
To find out more about North Sulawesi and to include
it on your next visit to Bali and Indonesia, please contact Jeremy at
or telephone 62-(0)438-32504 or facsimile 62-(0)438-31400.
