Indonesia’s 80th Anniversary was celebrated in every corner of the Country, including the award-winning Taman Safari Bali Park, where on Sunday, 17 August 2025. celebrants included the Park’s management and staff and God’s creatures great and small, ranging from sulfur-crested cockatoos to majestic Sumatran elephants.
Curators and caregivers accompanied a well-behaved herd of four elephants and a bevy of other animals gathered at the entrance area of the Park, where all paid homage to the red and white Indonesian flag and the hallowed moment 80 years ago when Sukarno proclaimed Indonesian nationhood in Jakarta.
The General Manager of Taman Safari Bali, Laetitia Delvart, explained that the enthusiastic participation of park keepers and animals in Independence Day celebrations on 17 August is a long-standing tradition at the Bali Safari Marine Park.
“We wish to prepare something unique. As a conservation institution, the animals here are well cared for, well-nourished, and in good health. They have also received special training so they can participate in ceremonies, such as Indonesian Independence Day, in an orderly manner,” Delvart said.
Meanwhile, the Head Veterinarian at Bali Safari Park, Dr. Yohana Kusumaningtyas Wuri H, explained that the adaptation and training process for each elephant is different. “Some elephants adapt quickly because they are calm, but others are sensitive to crowds, so it takes longer. Trainers must be patient and truly understand each elephant’s character,” she explained.
The Park’s Veterinarian continued, describing how the elephants joining the 17th August celebration were all more than 30 years old and very accustomed to working near crowds. From a total population of 31 elephants who live at the Park, only a select few are allowed proximity with the public.
The annual celebration on 17 August is always looked forward to by the public, Park staff, and the Park’s seemingly patriotic animals who make their home at the popular conservation center just a short drive from Bali’s capital of Denpasar.
