Australian Peter Barkell Runs Amok in Ubud

A 66-year-old Australian, Peter Arthur Barkell, has relocated to a new accommodation address in Bali following an incident at the Ina Inn on Jalan Bisma in Ubud.

As reported by BeritaBali.com, Barkell was first seen acting unusually on Friday, 01 August 2025, at around 10:00 am. At that time, he was behaving nervously, throwing a bucket at one of the Inn’s staff and also damaging a garden adjacent to the accommodation provider.

Barklell’s bizarre behavior was captured on the Inna Inn’s CCTV system.

The Australian’s bizarre behavior escalated on Saturday, 02 August 2025, at 3:00 pm when Nyoman Wahyu Ina Ananda (31), who works at the Inn, tried unsuccessfully to communicate with Barkell. The Australian reportedly withdrew further into himself and refused to speak with anyone, while holding a knife that he was using to inflict cuts on his arm.

Faced with this dangerous situation, Wahyu Ina Ananda contacted members of the local community watch (pacalang) while also notifying the Ubud Police Precinct.

Police arrived at the Inn at around 5:00 pm to find Barkell fast asleep. By 6:30 pm, the man was awake and able to speak with the villa’s owner.

Barkell had paid for his stay at the Inn from 28 June 2025 through 15 August 2025. However, following his outlandish behavior, a friend came to the Inn to move the Australian to a new accommodation address.

Police in Ubud confirmed that Barkell has moved hotels and will continue to monitor the situation.
