Radarbali.com reports that discussions and efforts are underway to transform the small, remote Letkol Wisnu Airport at Sumberkima in Buleleng, Northwest Bali, into an important regional aviation hub.
PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PTDI) – an Indonesian government-owned aerospace company, in cooperation with the Bali Provincial Transportation Agency, seeks to develop an aviation talent and workforce base that the future north Bali as an aeronautical industry hub will require.

Aviation visionaries cite Bali as strategically located along international and domestic air routes with the potential to become an aviation hub for maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) for eastern and central Indonesia.
Because of this potential, PTDI is exploring collaboration with the Regional Government of Bali, universities, and industrial partners to build an integrated aerospace ecosystem that includes aircraft maintenance capabilities and Human Resources (HR) Development through the establishment of an Aircraft Maintenance Training Operation (AMTO) in North Bali.

Through the establishment of the North Bali AMTO, PTDI is collaboratively focusing not only on knowledge and technology transfer but also on creating a learning environment for the younger generation to participate in aviation, while ensuring the availability of competent human resources in the MRO sector.
The establishment of the new AMTO is a crucial part of establishing a learning center and developing an aerospace industry ecosystem in Bali as a national aviation hub.
This bold initiative aligns with the Indonesian government’s development vision. The development of an AMTO-standard training center and MRO facilities in North Bali is anticipated to strengthen the local workforce’s competitiveness while attracting investment in aviation and aviation technology.
“PTDI views Bali not only as a tourist destination, but also as a strategic area for the development of the national aerospace industry. By integrating AMTO training and MRO development functions in North Bali, we aim to create a comprehensive aviation ecosystem, from education and certification to industrial activities, ultimately providing added value to the regional and national economies,” said Gita Amperiawan, President Director of PTDI.
Amperiawan spoke at the signing ceremony of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Bali Provincial Transportation Agency, PT Bali Widya Dirgantara, PT Bali Kerthi Byomantara, and several Bali Universities, addressing the implementation of education, research, community service, and human resource development elements with Balinese universities.

The Letkol Wisnu Airport in North Bali was used by the Bali International Flight Academy (BIFA) as a flight school base, a role PTDI will continue to use. Urgent work will now commence to revitalize the single runway and repair the apron to permit N219 Aircraft, built by PTDI, to land.
Also present at the signing ceremony was I Gede Nyoman Ari, of the Bali Provincial Transportation Agency.
