Bali Governor Requests “Hotel K” Prison be Relocated to Bangli

Beritabali.com reports that Bali Governor Wayan Koster is proposing to the Minister of Law, Supratman Andi Agtas, that Bali’s central prison in Kerobokan, West Denpasar, be relocated to the Regency of Bangli.

The Governor’s request and recommendation for the relocation of Bali’s most infamous prison, sometimes referred to as “Hotel K,” were delivered directly to Agtas, who subsequently positively endorsed the proposed move on behalf of the Central Government.

Governor Koster has emphasized that the proposed move of the prison is strongly supported by the Regency of Badung, where the prison is presently located.

Opened in 1979, the Kerobokan prison was initially built to accommodate 810 inmates; the current population of the prison has surpassed 1,800. The prison’s relocation is seen as essential to improve the crowded urban setting in Kerobokan and the heavy burden the prison places on the local infrastructure in that area.

The Bali Governor also met with Indonesian Minister of Health Budi Gunadi Sadikin on Tuesday, 16 September 2025, where he requested assistance in repairing and replacing medical equipment severely damaged by flooding at the Wangaya Hospital in Denpasar. The Mayor of Denpasar is supporting the request made to the Ministry of Health.

In response, Ministry Sadikin pledged to assist the RSUD Wangaya Hospital in the Tohpati area of Denpasar, but wants to first personally visit Bali to assess the damage caused by the floods to local health services and facilities. The Minister said he plans to visit Bali in the coming week.

Koster also used his visit to Jakarta to meet with the chairman of Commission V of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR-RI), Lazarus. The meeting with the national legislature saw the Governor request that key infrastructure projects in Bali be prioritized to permit the normalization of the Tukad Badung, Tukad Unda, and other waterways that drain southern Bali.

Lazarus promised to forward the Governor’s list of requested supports to Commission V of the DPR-RI, while also requesting that the Public Works Minister conduct an urgent inspection visit to Bali.
