Bali Turtle Island Loves Basa Bali

Balinese Language Month VIII – 2026 (Bulan Bahasa Bali VIII tahun 2026) was recently celebrated with considerable joy and vigor by villagers on Serangan Island in South Denpasar, Bali. The celebration was made possible in part through the generous support of PT Bali Turtle Island Development (BTID).

Zefri Alfaruqy, BTID’s Head of Communications, said strong support for Language month activities embodied his organization’s desire to foster and develop together with the larger Serangan Island community.

“Our participation demonstrates our commitment to supporting the Bali Provincial Government’s programs, particularly in preserving Balinese language, script, and literature,” Zefri explained.

He hopes that through this activity, Balinese literacy will remain a strong identity for every generation in Bali, especially for the people of Serangan Village.

“We are committed to continuing to work together with the government and community to preserve Balinese culture,” Zefri concluded.

As reported by STAR-NEWS.ID, on Tuesday, 03 February 2026, Members of Serangan Village gathered at the Lurah’s Office to celebrate Bulan Bahasa Bali VIII.

The Village Head (Lurah) of Serangan, Ni Wayan Sukanami, explained to the press that several competitive activities were held for the amusement and entertainment of local residents, ranging from grade school students to housewives from the six communities (banjar) that comprise Pulau Serangan.

Funds from the Serangan Village Regional Budget made possible the Nyurat Aksara Contest (Balinese Letter Writing), which was popular among the village’s elementary school-age children.

Older children from Serangan’s High and Vocational Schools eagerly followed the ngwacen competition, which allowed students to demonstrate their reading skills. Meanwhile. Members of the Serangan Women’s Association (PKK) were animated in their participation in a traditional storytelling (mesatua) competition.

Ni Wayan Sukanami, in her capacity as Village Chief, explained that the range of competitive activities was part of the 7th Balinese Language Month Festivities, intended to preserve Balinese culture and the Balinese language.

Sukanami shared how villagers at Serangan Island participate in outreach and educational programs designed to preserve the “mother tongue” of the Balinese language, which is under threat from technological advances in the digital era.

The female village chief of Serangan Island wishes the Balinese language to become an integral part of daily life, particularly among the young people of her island community. Adding, “we hope that the Balinese Language Month can arouse them to love and know Balinese culture.”

Ni Putu Priliyanti, one of the women participating in the Masatua storytelling competition, expressed her joy at the opportunity to improve and demonstrate her fluency in her mother tongue, “Basa Bali.” A mother, Priliyanti, is hopeful that the annual celebration of Bulan Bahasa in February will help the Balinese flourish and escape extinction on the Island of her birth.

She said the linguistic competitions have made her children more enthusiastic about using Balinese daily.
