Breaking News: Bali COVID Numbers Improve

While Balidiscovery.com’s continuing coverage of trends in new COVID-19 cases and deaths documents a worrying surge that emerged since early July 2021, the most current batch of statistics provided from official sources indicates that the recent wave in the epidemic may finally be on the wane.

Balidiscovery.com and Bali Update pays full homage to Ubud-based researcher and statistician Jackie Pomeroy, who maintains a thoughtful vigil on COVID-19 developments in Bali and prepares the very informative graphs accompanying our coverage.

What do the evolving numbers and charts show?

  • Demonstrating a continuing decline in new cases, on 29 August there were only 302 new cases in Bali and 48 deaths. Both of these figures represent marked improvements. Daily new cases just ten days before surpassed 1,000, while deaths recorded on 16 August reached 206.
  • According to the National Task Force for COVID-19 (BNPB), the nationwide daily count for 27 August 2021 was 12,618 new cases, 19,920 recoveries, 599 deaths, and 236,317 active cases.
  • A total of 107,500 individuals tested nationwide on 27 August 2021 resulting in a positivity rate of 11.7%. Meanwhile, the national average rate of positivity over seven days was 13.5%.
  • Bali vaccination numbers for 27 Aug 2021 were: First dose 3,161,938 (73.2% of the population); second dose 1,743,618 (40.4% of the population); 72,726 additional doses were injected on 28 August 2021. Percentage figures are based on the population numbers from the National Statistic Bureau (BPS) population census for 2020.

The latest figures represent welcome news and an apparent vindication of government steps to thwart the rise in COVID-19 cases through limitations on public movements, aggressive inoculation programs, and strict application of health protocols.

At the same time, many in Bali are concerned that the convergence of two major Balinese holy days (Saraswati 28 August and Pagerwesti 01 September) could precipitate a new wave of infections resulting from group clusters at ceremonial gatherings.

Again, Bali Update thanks Jack Pomeroy for her meticulous statistical work, without which these reports would not be possible
