Disabled Dutch Marijuana Cultivator Facing 9 Years of Prison in Bali

A Dutch national. Rashim Abdoelrazak, appeared in a Denpasar, Bali courtroom on Monday, 19 May 2026, to hear State Prosecutors demand a 9-year prison sentence for creating an illegal hydroponic marijuana garden in his rented accommodation in North Denpasar, Bali.

Abdoelrazak, a 30-year-old disabled Dutchman who is confined to using either crutches or a wheelchair, is now facing 9 years behind bars and a possible fine of Rp. 1 billion. Failure to pay that fine will result in an additional 80 days of imprisonment.

The presiding judges said Abdoelrazak’s final sentence will be mitigated to some degree by the defendant’s polite demeanor before the Court and his freely expressed remorse for violating the narcotic laws of the Republic of Indonesia. The judges cautioned that weighing against the man’s favor was his failure to support Indonesia’s official anti-narcotics program.

Speaking through an official translator, Abdoelrazak is now preparing his official pleading before the 3-person panel of judges. The Dutchman has spent the entire legal proceeding sitting in a wheelchair.

The man living in Bali as a tourist was cultivating a hydroponic crop of marijuana in the Village of Ubung Kaja in North Denpasar. Abdoelrazak was arrested at 12:30 pm on 01 October 2025, at his rented accommodation located on Jalan Bina Kusuma IV, Ubung Kaja, Denpasar Utara. He was apprehended by police together with a female accomplice, Kseniia Varlamova, who was tried separately.

Abdoelrazak’s hydroponic garden, located within his rented home, was home to 14 large marijuana plants.

”The defendant intended to continue to cultivate marijuana, which had been situated in a black hydroponic tent, to produce more drugs over time,” said Public Prosecutor Lovi.

Assisted by a colleague, Chester, the hydroponic racks were constructed within the house beginning on 25 August 2025. The Dutchman placed moistened tissues containing marijuana seeds on the rack, allowing the plants to propagate. The seedlings were eventually transplanted to an outside walled garden for eventual harvesting.

Kseniia Varlamova ( 33), Nirul Rashim Abdoelrazak’s partner, received a lighter sentence. The Russian tattoo artist was sentenced to only eight months in prison.
