Man Dies in Freak Mishap at Bali Gym

Justyn Vicky

A freak gym accident in Bali has claimed the life of a popular bodybuilder and personal trainer working in Denpasar, Bali, Justyn Vicky, aged 33.

Vicky, originally from East Java, had lived for years in Bali, where he was well-known as a bodybuilder, nutritional advisor, and personal trainer.

Information gathered on social media accounts indicates Vicky was exercising at The Paradise Gym on Jalan Danau Tamblingan, Sanur Bali, on Saturday morning, 15 July 2023, where he attempted to squat press a weight in excess of 180 kg.

Only supported by a single “spotter” standing behind, Vicky failed to complete the lift and fell forward, cascading the weight bar off his shoulders and snapping his neck and head forward.

A video depicts the moment the fatal accident occurred. Justyn Vickry died from a broken neck. It is unclear if the fatal incident was a matter of simple misadventure or if some degree of culpability exists on the part of the singular “spotter” who was unable to rescue Vicky from the position of standing behind a man pressing 180 kg.

Suffering severe neck and spinal injuries, Justyn Vicky was rushed to a local hospital for emergency surgery, only to die a short time later.
