The State News Agency Antara reports a call by a member of Commission III of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR-RI), Ahmad Basara, to withdraw a 5-year sentence remission given by Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to Australian marijuana smuggler Schapelle Corby.

Saying Indonesia earned no strategic or advantage from the Presidential remission of sentence, Basara said: “Because of that, I urge the President to revoke the sentence remission he gave to the convicted narcotics smuggler Corby. This is important to demonstrate the anger of the Indonesian people for behavior unbecoming a sovereign neighboring nation.”

The national legislator said the sentence remission for Schapelle Corby sent a wrong message to international drug networks that Indonesia had a permissive attitude towards those choosing to deal drugs in the Republic.

Clearly angered and reflecting a sentiment shared by many Indonesian leaders, Basara said Australia had attacked the people of Indonesia by eavesdropping on its leaders, insisted they had done nothing wrong in doing so, and refused to offer an apology for their actions. Concluding, he said there remains no reason for Indonesia to maintain a strategic relationship with the government of Australia.

Meanwhile, another member of Commission III of the DPR-RI, Bukhori Yusuf, also insisted that Yudhoyono revoke the remission given to the Australian woman. “I very much agree that President SBY must revoke the decree giving a remission because from the beginning the granting of remission was problematic,” said Bukori
