Two young junior high school boys from Jembrana, West Bali have been added to the growing list of underage children sacrificed on Bali roadways due to the inability of those who supervise them to restrain children from operating vehicles and the police’s failure to enforce traffic regulations.
Life ended for Kadek Agus Setiawan (14) and Komang Agus Putra Sasmita (13) when the two junior high school students collided with the side of a truck at kilometer 87-88 on the Denpasar-Giliamanuk highway on the afternoon of Monday. November 25, 2013.
A Scoopy Honda motorcycle driven by Setiawan attempted to illegally pass a truck on the left side when he struck the side of the moving vehicle. Komang was thrown to the side of the road while Setiawan stayed with his motorcycle as it tumbled down the roadway.
The boys were both residents of a boarding facility for students at the Mendoyo 4 Junior High School. The motorcycle they were driving was owned by the supervisor of the boys’ dormitory, Eka Pramana Dewi (30).
According to Radar Bali, the parents of the boys, upon learning of the accident, became angry with the school for allowing their children to use a motorcycle when the legal age for driving is 17 years.
Those in charge of the dormitory, however, claim the boys took the keys to the motorcycle without permission.
