The State News Agency Antara reports that Indonesia’s expanding economy will soon propel the Country into becoming the fifth largest domestic air market in the world.
Underlying the huge potential for Indonesian air traffic is the Country's population of 240 million and the large area of the globe covered by Indonesia’s more than 17,000 islands.
The chairman of the Indonesian National Air Carrier Association (INACA), Arif Wibowo, calculates that domestic air traffic doubled from 2008 to 2013 when 74.2 million people flew domestically.
Meanwhile, 10.8 million people flew internationally through an Indonesian airport in 2013.
By 2015 the total size of the domestic air traffic market among all ASEAN countries will hit 100 million, a number expected to grow to 180 million by 2018.
Wibowo, who is also CEO of Citilink Airline, said the current rapid growth in domestic air travel would soon see Indonesia as the world’s fifth largest aviation market after the U.S.A., China, Japan and Brazil.
According to a study conducted by McKinsey and Company, Indonesia will become the world's 7th largest economy in 2030 with 90 million people taking a flight each year. That total surpasses the 77 million French citizens who currently take a flight each year.
