The State News Agency Antara reports that based on emission tests conducted by the State Environment Agency (BLH), motorcycles are the greatest contributors to air pollution in Bali’s capital city of Denpasar.
Anak Agung Bagus Sudharsana, the chief of BLH-Denpasar, said, “From a total of 754 motorcycles undergoing emission tests, as many as 212 failed to pass suggesting that it is motorcycles that the biggest causes of air pollution in Denpasar.”
The environmental civil servant said that certain motorcycle brands sold in Bali have internal combustion systems that are inefficient and this particular brand is popular among young people. Sudharsana did not name the offending brand of motorbike.
Continuing, he said: “It seems that vehicle with two-stroke engines must be reduced. Not only are they wasteful in their consumption of fuel, they are also highly polluting. This type of motorbike is, nonetheless, popular with young people because of the specific sound produced by its muffler.”
He also blamed the high rate of pollution on the failure of motorcycle owners to properly care for their vehicles.
