The chairman of the Bali chapter of the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI-Bali), Tjokorda Oka Artha Ardana Sukawati (Cok Ace) told the State News Agency Antara that he hopes the next Indonesian President and Vice President have an understanding that supports the tourism sector.

“For this reason, whoever becomes president must guarantee safety and security, because these are an absolute necessity for the tourism industry,” said Cok Ave.

The former regent of Gianyar also hoped that the security of the Island of Bali becomes a special concern of Indonesia’s next national leader.

“Bali has contributed greats amount of foreign exchange to Indonesia and tourism has become a staple of the economic life of the people of Bali,” he explained.

Continuing, the PHRI chairman said that the development now underway in Bali appears to be disorganized and uncontrolled. Moreover, he said there were great disparities between the rate of development in the Island’s South and North. “The current competition between accommodation providers is not healthy,” he added.

For this reason, Cok Ace said it should come as surprise to no one that societal problems continue to pervade Balinese life, with many Balinese poor and dependent on begging in order to survive.

He lamented that the two pairs of candidates – Prabowo Subianto and Hatta Rajasa, and Joko Widodo and Jusuf Kalla – have thus far failed to express a concern for the tourism sector, especially in Bali.
