The Denpasar District Court has sentenced 49-year-old French national Francois Jacques Giuily, to 15-year imprisonment, declaring the man guilt of smuggling three kilograms of methamphetamines via Bali’s airport.
In addition to the 15 year prison sentence, the judges ordered Giuily was ordered to pay a fine of Rp. 8 billion (US$695,000) or have additional time tacked on to his sentence.
Giuily ‘s attorney plead there client was merely a courier who suffered from limited intellectual capacities and was financially dependent on an aging, ailing mother.
In handing down a sentence of 15-years, the judge were more lenient in their sentencing than the 17-years demanded by prosecutors.
The Frenchman did not, however, see prosecutors seek the maximum penalty of death before a firing squad.
The man was arrested on January 19, 2014 while passing through Bali’s airport with the narcotics in his possession.
