Public Complain About Long Lines at Entrances to Bali’s Jasa Margo Toll Way

As reported by, there has been a gowing public outcry over long lines and delays at the entranceways to Bali’s Mandara Toll Way.

The backlog of people waiting to electronically pay the toll fee is most evident in late afternoons with lines of cars stretching as much as a kilometer or more before actually passing the tollgate.

The CEO of PT Jasamarga Bali Tol (JBT), Akhmad Tito Karim, admits that in the past week there have been long lines at the toll way’s entrances. Karim reports that there has been a sudden increase in the number of people using the toll road, increasing from an average 40,000 to the 50,000 vehicles recorded each day in February. Adding: “Suddenly there are many people visiting Bali. It’s not clear that they understand the JBT’s policy of only accepting non-cash (electronic) payment.”

Karim broke down the popularity of the various access roads to the toll way with 15% entering from the Ngurah Rai Airport gate, 40% from the Benoa Port entrance, and 45% entering from the Nusa Dua gateway.

Karim said long lines are occurring every afternoon from Nusa Dua, assuring the public that all the toll machines are working perfectly.

The causes of the delays, according to the JBT CEO,  are vehicles entering the toll without the required electronic payment card or using a card with an insufficient balance. He said many passengers are also too quick removing their card from the reader before the gate arm has actually risen.

To deal with the problem of congestion in the future, JBT is installing a “top up drive thru” gate at the Benoa entrance to the roadway.
