The narcotics division of the Bali police headquarters is reviewing a case involving two provincial legislators from the Central Java capital of Semarang who were arrested on Tuesday, February 1, 2011, in possession of 0.56 grams of crystal methamphetamine (sabu-sabu).

Colonel (Kombes Besar) Mulyadi who is director of the narcotics division at the Bali police told TVOne, "we are still delving into the case to determine if these two peoples' representatives are dealers or only users of narcotics."

The two men have been identified in The Jakarta Globeas 37-year-old Edy Purwanto of the Democratic Party faction and 45-year-old Bambang Sutrisno from the Democratic Party of Struggle.

The two were arrested on Tuesday evening at 9:45 in a guest room at the Ramayana Resort and Spain Kuta. Police reportedly raided the room after receiving a report that a man suspected of carrying narcotics was in the hotel.

Purwanto was seen by police wandering aimlessly in the hotel's lobby. When stopped, questioned and searched by police they found a quantity of the drugs in his possession. Purwanto directed the police to Sutrisno's room where drugs and drugs paraphernalia were found.

Purwanto told police he had purchased the drugs for Rp. 1,9 million (US$211) from an unknown woman on Kuta beach.

The Jakarta Globe has highlighted the special treatment being accorded the two in custody. Rather than being paraded before the press, as is usually the case for arrested in narcotics cases, the two lawmakers are being shielded from the press and only their initials are being used in announcements made by the police spokesperson.

The two lawmakers suspected of having broken the nation's narcotics law could theoretically face a maximum penalty of up to 12 years in prison and Rp. 8 billion (US$880,000) in fines.
