According to Kompas.com, the police precinct at Bali’s Ngurah Rai Airport have busted a syndicate stealing alcoholic beverages from the business class galleys of Garuda Indonesia aircraft transiting Bali.
Indications are that the members of the booze theft syndicate are all employed by the national carrier, its subsidiaries or contractors employed at the airport.
The theft was discovered during a raid conducted by airport police on the cargo terminal of the Bali airport on July 14, 2011. During the inpection raide Police inspected the backpack of an airline employee and found it contained imported alcoholic beverages.
When police traced the source of the alcohol they discovered it had been stolen from a sealed food trolley placed in the business class section of a parked Garuda aircraft.
The man caught with the stolen beverage, Bobby, works at the airport and was acting as the “fence” for bottles stolen by I Nyoman Sugara, Made Yoga, Nengah Suarta and Gusti Putra – reportedly all employees of Garuda. According to police, Sugara and Yoga were the ringleaders in the theft.
Police say the thieves pretended to be collecting trash from the parked aircraft. Sugara who worked as part of the cleaning service would remove the drinks that were handed to Made Yoga who worked as a driver of a catering tuck.
On board the aircraft the men would break the seal on a food trolley, remove the alcohol and place it inside a garbage container.
Police arrested the men and seized 20 bottles of alcohol as evidence.
