The Bali Post says three individuals involved in the theft and sale of domesticated dogs in Bali were arrested by police on Tuesday, March 5, 2013, in a raid that saw one of the suspects escape.

The three men would poison dogs on Bali’s streets and then sell the animals’ carcasses to businesses that had ordered the animals in advance. In a single month, the dog meat salesmen would make as many as 20 deliveries.

The dogs were poisoned in outlying areas of Bali such a Bangli and loaded into sacks to be sent to waiting customers in Denpasar.

The head of the criminal division of the Bangli police precinct I Gusti Sudarma Putra, accompanied by the spokesman for the Bangli police Ida I Dewa Nyoman Rai, said the arrest of the two men and the escape of the third man now sought by police occurred when a group of officers were patrolling in Bangli.

At that time, a report had been received that a number of dogs had been poisoned. When police responded to the scene they arrested John KA (38) and Toga Jer (31) who listed their place of residence as Jalan Leda Made Putra No. 17, Kampung Flores in Denpasar.

A third man, Mar, managed to evade arrest as he made off in the direction of Denpasar where police continue to seek his whereabouts.

In Bangli police found evidence of 7 dogs that had been poisoned.

Police said the men were stealing and killing dogs owned by people in Bangli, Gianyar and Denpasar – averaging more than 20 dogs each month
