Run for the Hills

Bali and Beyond: Join the Marathon on Moon at Mt Bromo, East Java, September 1, 2013.

The Bromo Marathon will be run through the villages surrounding East Java’s Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park and along the Tengger caldera.

The event will feature three categories of competition:

  •  Full-marathon distance (42.195 km)
  • Half marathon distance (21.0975 km)
  • 10-kilometer run
253 runners have already registered to take on the challenge of the Bromo Marathon to be held on the slopes of Mt. Bromo on September 1, 2013.

A challenging course with both attitude and altitude, 50 runners have signed on for the full marathon, 140 for the half marathon and 63 for the 10-kilometer event.

Some 60% of those registered hail from Indonesia with the remaining runners coming from Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Poland, Singapore, United Kingdom, Untied States, and Vietnam.

The wide diversity of runners will ensure that the organizer's goals to encourage cross-cultural exchange and celebrating cultural diversity as a means of promoting peace through understanding will be met.

A revised race day schedule is has been announced:
  • 5:40 – 6:50 am     Bag Drop & Runner’s Warm-Up
  • 7:00 am Bromo    Marathon Start
  • 7:30 am Bromo    Half Marathon Start
  • 8:00 am Bromo    10K Start
  • 10:30 am Bromo  10K Cut Off
  • 3:00 pm                  Bromo Marathon & Half Marathon Cut Off
Reporting on the progress leading up to the inaugural running of the event, event manager Dedik Kurniawan said, “When we first introduced the idea, we knew it would be a lot of work, but we’ve had so much support from the community that everything has been running quite smoothly. This event is more than just a race to the people here, it’s a way to open their community and share their way of life, while raising money for a good cause.”

A charity event, proceeds from this year’s marathon will be used to support area schools by building libraries and qualified staff to support literacy programs.
