A Generation in Jail Awaits

Balinese Crewmember on Holland America’s Nieuw Amsterdam Facing 28 Years in U.S. Prison for Criminal Assault

(3/2/2014) Ketut Pujayasa - the 28-year-old Balinese waiter accused of assault, rape and the attempted murder of a female passenger on Holland America’s Nieuw Amsterdam has been arraigned in a South Florida Federal Court.

The young sailor from North Bali has been advised that he faces a possible prison sentence of 22-28 years in U.S. prisons on multiple charges of rape (17.5 -22 years) and attempted murder (5 -6.5 years).

Beritabali.com reports that Ketut Pujayasa was arraigned on February 25, 2014. He is represented by a court-appointed attorney and accompanied at proceeding with officers from the Houston, Texas Consulate General of Indonesia.

At the initial court hearing prosecutors presented evidence collected from the victim’s and Pujayasa’s cabins, forensic reports including photographs of the injury suffered by the female passenger. A doctor testifying at the hearing said he was shocked by the extent of the woman’s injuries.

Pujayasa’s next court date is set for March 4, 201.
