Garuda Announces Amsterdam Flights will Avoid Ukraine Airspace Following Shoot Down of Malaysian Airline Flight

(7/19/2014) Following the downing of a Malaysian Airline Boeing 777 by a Russian-built military missile over Ukraine on Thursday, July 17, 2014, the national carrier Garuda Indonesia has announced flights operating to and from Amsterdam will avoid the airspace where MH17 was shot down.

The head of corporate communications for Garuda Indonesia, Pujobroto, issued an electronic message on Friday, July 18, 2014, quoted by Suara Pembaruan, stating: “Garuda Indonesia flights from Amsterdam to Jakarta will overfly Budapest, Istanbul, Kuwait, Dubai, Muscat, India and Sri Lanka – avoiding completely flying over Ukrainian air space.”

Pujobroto, who is in Amsterdam on assignment with Garuda, expressed his Airline’s sympathies for Malaysian Airlines.

Garuda Indonesia currently flies five times a week between Amsterdam and Jakarta.

MH17 fell form the skies in the eastern portion of the Ukraine near the Russian border while making its ways form Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur.

A total of 298 passengers and crew perished in the military attack on a civilian aircraft flying at 33,000 feet on an a route approved for international civil aviation.
