Preying on Travelers

Touts and Uniformed Extortionists Rounded Up at Jakarta Airport

(8/4/2014) The Jakarta Globe reports that as the result of action by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), a crackdown is underway against the widespread and flagrant victimization of foreigners and migrant workers at Soekarno-Hatta Airport in Jakarta.

At least 18 people have been arrested during weekend raids carried out by KPK officials Starting on July 22, 2014.

Police and KPK officials are now examining closed circuit TV recordings.

Police and military officers and illegal taxi drivers allegedly carried out the extortion of foreigners and returning migrant workers.

Among the 18 people taken into custody over the weekend we a soldier, two police officers and 15 illegal taxi operators.

Those arrested are alleged to have colluded in charging foreigners and migrant workers to pay as much as US$250 for exorbitantly priced taxi fares.

The two police officers are undergoing a disciplinary review that could result in their discharge from the police force.

The single police officer has been handed over to his superiors where it is unclear if further action will be taken against him.

Police have released the 15 drivers due to a lack of evidence sufficient to bring the men to trial.

Police are asking members of the public who may have been victimized while passing through the airport to contact the police.
