Natural Disasters and Negative Social Media Coverage Impacting Bali Arrivals

RadarBali reports that negative social media posts and widespread flooding are being blamed for a downturn in domestic tourist arrivals to Bali.

Meanwhile, Tjokorda Oka Artha Ardhana Sukawati (Cok Ace), the chairman of the Bali Chapter of the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI-Bali), said the number of domestic tourists to other parts of Indonesia is increasing.

“The downturn in domestic arrivals cannot be separated from the natural disasters in Bali, and the potential for other natural disasters that are repeatedly exposed by the media,” explained Cok Ace, who was also the former Deputy Governor of Bali. The PHRI-Bali Chairman noted that domestic tourists who usually come to Bali are shifting to other domestic tourist destinations that are considered closer and more affordable.

Many domestic tourists are choosing tourist destinations in Java, such as Yogyakarta, because of their proximity and the increasingly improved infrastructure, accommodation, and attractions.

“This can’t be separated from the floods and natural disasters happening in Bali and the potential for other natural disasters that have been repeatedly exposed,” explained the former Deputy Governor of Bali. Cok Ace said that domestic tourists are shifting to other tourist destinations because they perceive them as closer and more affordable.

For example, they are choosing tourist attractions in Java, including Yogyakarta, due to their proximity and improved infrastructure.

“The increase in international tourists to Bali was insignificant last year. Meanwhile, accommodation in the form of hotels and villa construction continues to increase, resulting in a decrease in hotel occupancy compared to the past,” he explained.

Although the number of domestic tourists has decreased, international tourist arrivals remain positive. According to Angkasa Pura, the airport management company, as of December 21, the number of international tourists has reached over 6.8 million. “Bali is expected to see an increase in foreign tourists compared to 2024,” he explained.

Cok Ace warned the local government agencies to address the growing imbalance in villa development while hotel occupancy rates are declining. He also emphasized the importance of tourist comfort and safety while in Bali.

Cok Ace says declines in domestic tourism numbers are being exacerbated by negative information about Bali circulating on social media. The PHRI Chairman believes there is a deliberate attempt by competing tourism destinations to undermine Bali. Because of this, he hopes that all information on social media will be handled wisely.
