Peter Zipser, a 69-year-old Austrian pensioner from the Village of Kalisada, Buleleng, North Bali has died after being involved in a chain collision at Kilometer 24 (Seririt) on the Singaraja-Gilimanuk Highway on Thursday, July 11, 2019 at 1:00 pm.
As reported by NusaBali, the accident took place when Edi Siswanto (38) from Banyuwangi, East Java was driving a Mitsubishi Truck traveling in a westerly direction with two motorcycles and a Toyota Inova, at the lead, preceding his vehicle down the highway.
At the lead of the four-vehicle convoy was a Toyota Innova, followed by two motorcycles – one driven by Peter Zepser and the other by Ketut Mariada (49) of Sirit, with Siswanto at the end of the line.
When Zipser slowed his motorcycle and signaled to make a right turn his Yamaha NMAX motorcycle and the Honda Vario driven by Mariada were struck from behind by the truck driven by Siswanto. The force of the impact pushed both motorcycles into the rear of the Kijang Innova.
Both Zepser and Mariada were not wearing helmets when the crash sent and their motorcycles tumbling down the roadway. Both men were rushed to the nearby Santi Graha Seririt Hospital.
Peter Zepser was pronounced dead-on-arrival at the hospital with multiple head injuries, abrasions on his hip, a torn right knee, and open wounds on his right thigh and right ankle. Mariada suffered a number of cuts and abrasions and was warded at the hospital.
Police confirmed that Siswanto is being held in custody to complete the investigation of the accident in which police say the driver of the truck failed to exercise due caution causing the death of one man and injuries to another. Witness confirmed that both motorcyclists were guilty of contributory negligence by failing to wear helmets as required by law at the time of the accident.
Police say Peter Zepser was living in North Bali on a retirement visa with his wife.
